Black and white photos highlight the image of Hanoi; “Vietnamese cultural bookcase” to open in RoK; Ha Noi goes ‘dingbats’ at exhibition; Leading ‘success coach’ Jack Canfield to visit Vietnam Black and white photos highlight the image of Hanoi An exhibition of more than 100 black and white photos opened in Hanoi on August 23 to reproduce the image of Hanoi during the resistance wars against the French colonists and American imperialists. In the spotlight are valuable documents on late President Ho Chi Minh and other Party and State leaders as well as many photos of Hanoi and its citizens in the Doi Moi (Renewal) process. Nguyen Duc Loi, deputy director of the Vietnam News Agency, said the event is part of the activities to mark the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi. The exhibition will run until August 29. “Vietnamese cultural bookcase” to open in RoK The “Vietnamese cultural bookcase” will open at the Republic of Korea (RoK)’s Museum of Ethnology in Seoul in late August. The event is part of a project themed the RoK’s “multi-cultural bookcase” with a focus on Vietnam and Mongolia this year. The project will then expand to other foreign communities in the RoK. With this exhibition, visitors will have the chance to find out more about different cultures as many documents, artifacts and visual displays will be on show. Viewers can explore many subjects, including history, language, flora and fauna, cuisine, musical instruments and traditional games. Several comics and cartoons have been translated into both Vietnamese and Korean, for young readers of multi-cultural families. Vietnam now has 90,000 people living and working in the RoK, second only to China. Of these, 35,000 are brides to Koreans. The event, co-organised by the Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Union of Literature and Arts Associations of Da Nang city, will last until August 25. Ha Noi goes ‘dingbats’ at exhibition Dingbats Brazil, an exhibition of Brazilian graphic design, is now being held at the Viet Nam Fine Arts Museum. The exhibition features a decade of digital pictorial alphabets – or dingbats – in 35 works by 22 prominent, contemporary designers. Sponsored by the Brazilian Embassy in Ha Noi, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Viet Nam Fine Arts Museum, Dingbats Brazil presents a little-known aspect of Brazilian graphic arts in the hope of promoting understanding and a dialogue among artists and the public, said Brazilian Ambassador to Viet Nam Joao de Mendonca Lima Neto. Selected by graphic designer Bruno Porto in 2006 while he was the co-ordinator of illustration studies for the Visual Arts Institute of Rio de Janeiro’s UniverCidade, the exhibition also forms a chronicle of Brazilian culture through icons of music, religion, arts, sport and cuisine. Many dingbats are pictograms – tiny pictures of churches, airplanes, skiers, telephones and symbols used in tourist industry. In recent decades, Brazilian graphic design has become increasingly popular in Latin America, Europe and Africa. This decade, a small but dedicated group of Brazilian designers has sought to include Asia in this landscape, promoting Brazilian graphic arts through exhibitions, magazine articles, workshops and lectures, said Neto. “We don’t want to present what you and the world have already known about Brazil like football or samba,” he added. “We want to introduce something you didn’t have any idea about.” The exhibition runs through August 30 at 66 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street in Ha Noi. Photography festival, competition held in Da Nang on weekend The 15th Arts Photo Festival was held in the central city of Da Nang on the weekend. The festival included an exhibition of the top 150 photos in a competition that drew 1,170 entries. The works on show included landscape photography, vivid images of ordinary people’s lives and photographic celebrations of the achievements of the doi moi (renewal process). Two gold medals were given to Khoanh Khac Truong Sa (A Moment in Truong Sa) by Van Thanh Chau from the central province of Khanh Hoa and Vong Xoan Ngay Hoi (Bead Tree Wreath Festival) by Nguyen The Duc from the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum. The festival drew 200 professional and amateur photographers from 10 cities and provinces. Leading ‘success coach’ Jack Canfield to visit Vietnam Jack Canfield, an American success coach and authority on peak performance, will host a one-day seminar on Achieving Breakthrough Results in Work and Life in HCM City next month. Viet Nam is among five countries he will visit during his trip to Asia, including Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines and Thailand. In a preparatory step for next month’s workshop, Canfield’s co-author for the book titled The Success Principles&Leadership for Youth, Dr Peter Chee on Saturday spoke on techniques for achieving breakthrough success based on the Success Principles studied and developed by Jack Canfield.
