VietNamNet Bridge - The Hanoi ceramic mosaic mural project is preparing to unveil the incredible ceramic mosaic mural which it hopes will earn the city a place in the Guinness World Records.

The Hanoi ceramic mosaic mural project has created a ceramic mosaic which will measure 3.85 kilometers long (6,950m2) when completed. On 5th October 2010, an official Guinness World Records adjudicator will travel to Hanoi to measure the mosaic and determine whether a new Guinness World Records achievement has been set.

The mosaic will be unveiled to coincide with the 1,000 year celebrations of the establishment of Hanoi and aims to transform the urban stretches of the Red River dyke, an essential flood defence for Hanoi but one that has been subjected to years of illegal graffiti and advertising.

The colorful and creative mural has been in construction since 2007, when the concept was first developed by artist Nguyen Thu Thuy. Thuy wanted to mark the city’s millennium with an artistic mural to reinvigorate urban Hanoi and bring the communities together through public art.

Since 2007, the mosaic has involved 35 professional artists from Vietnam and from 10 countries including Denmark, France, Holland, Spain, Italy, Britain, America, Argentina, New Zealand and Australia. In addition, over 100 artisans from traditional ceramic villages in Vietnam joined the project and were supported by 500 Vietnamese and international children, and students from fine arts colleges throughout Vietnam.

Each artist has brought their own creative ideas and techniques to the mural, and expressed these using ceramic tiles measuring just 3×3cm. Each meter square contains 1,000 of these tiny tiles.

Commenting on the Guinness World Records achievement, Thuy said: “This project has aimed to bring together as many people as possible, both domestic and international artists, local children and communities as well as welcoming international artists from around the world.”

“The result is a dynamic and vibrant piece of public art which reflects the traditional culture and modern spirit of Hanoi. We are excited to unveil the finished mural and to find out whether we have successfully gained a Guinness World Records achievement.”
