VietNamNet Bridge – On January 27 afternoon, Thieu Quang was preparing for his adventure to the South Pole at his home in Van Bao street, Hanoi. The 9-year-old boy may become the youngest Asian who goes to the South Pole.

Thieu Quang and his father will fly to Buenos Aires (Argentina) and then go to Ushuia city to get into the MS Fram ship of Hurtigruten (UK) to go to the Antarctic. This is a self-funded journey.

In late afternoon of January 27, several hours before going to the airport, Thieu Quang was still playing with his younger brother, 5, at home. At the same time, his father was still at his office to do last minute work before leaving Vietnam to the Antarctic. Their luggage was packed and ready to go.

Showing his small bag of chocolate, the boy said that this is indispensable cooking during the adventure because he likes chocolate very much. “I will share it with my father and penguins in the South Pole,” he said.

Besides chocolate, the boy has a big collection of aircraft models and cartoon books featuring Doremon cat from Japan. Quang said his dream is to become an architect or an aircraft, boat designer.

Quang said he and his father had searched for information about the South Pole for several months. He said that it is now summer in the Antarctic so the weather is not so severe. The boy said he has experienced temperatures less than zero degrees Celsius in China before.

To prepare for the journey, the fourth grader exercised regularly, learned photography and  hwo to film. He said he would make a short film about the South Pole. He and his classmates discussed the script very carefully.

The boy plans to display his photos of Antarctic at his school after the trip, which will last for two weeks.

He said he wanted to take his trip as a call for everyone to pay attention to climate change and to protect the living environment.

If the trip is successful, Quang will be the youngest Asian who visits the Antarctic.

In 1997, Ms. Hoang Thi Minh Hong was the first Vietnamese who went to the South Pole.
