VietNamNet Bridge – Last week the Hanoi and HCM City Youth Unions honored their top outstanding young members of 2010.

While Hanoi chose ten young people to present the title “Most outstanding young faces of 2010”, HCM City presented the “Most outstanding young citizen” title to only five people.

HCM City’s five outstanding young citizens are all men, Hanoi had four outstanding women and six outstanding men.

The average age for HCM City’s outstanding was 27 while for Hanoi the average age was 22.4.

The youngest person is Nguyen Hoang Viet Hai, 11, a fourth grader from the Khuong Mai Primary School in Hanoi.

The oldest outstanding individuals are Dr. Tran Van Tan, a lecturer of the Hanoi Teacher Training University and colonel Ngo Van Thanh from the Hanoi High Command, 35.

Outstanding people of Hanoi and HCM City work in various fields, from teachers to students, police officers, soldiers, workers, athletes. However, Hanoi has a pianist in the list (Hoang Pham Tra My, gold medal winner of the Asian Piano Festival).

The two lists have people who are disadvantaged people who are successful in life. Nguyen Van Cai (HCM City) lost his father when he was a baby while his mother is a mental patient. Cai had to sell newspapers to earn his living but he passed into three universities. He is currently a teacher of a high school.

Dao Thu Huong, a blind girl in Hanoi, achieved records that many ordinary people have yet to achieve. She was the highest achieving student of the Hanoi Teacher Training University, a “hero” as Microsoft’s selection. Huong is now an English translator and an English teacher for blind people. She also works as a host of charity concerts.

All 15 outstanding young people of Hanoi and HCM City have attained great success in their fields and have contributed to the community.

Hanoi’s ten outstanding faces

1. Nguyen Thi Thanh Ha (born in 1978), doctor of the Hanoi Friendship Hospital, an outstanding example of the voluntary examination campaign for the community.

2. Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Van Tan, lecturer at the Hanoi Teacher Training University (1976), was conferred the title Associate Professor at the age of 34. Tan won two certificates of merit from the Ministry of Education and Training and the “Sci-tech Creative Youth” medal.

3. Colonel Ngo Van Thanh (1976), from the Logistics Department of the Hanoi High Command, has earned the titles Emulation Soldier and “Creative Youth” of the Vietnam People’s Army for ten consecutive years.

4. Hoang Van Tung (1978), from the Mechanics Faculty of the Hanoi Industry College, won the gold medal at the ASEAN Worker Skills Competition and the first prizes at the national and Hanoi worker skills competitions 2010.

5. Vu Dang Minh Quan (1996), student of the Hanoi Amsterdam High School, won the gold medal at the Asia-Pacific Mathematics Competition 2009, the silver medal at the Singaporean Open Mathematic Olympiad 2010, and the bronze medal of the International Young Scientific Olympiad 2010.

6. Nguyen Hoang Viet Hai (2001), from the Khuong Mai Primary School, is an international chess master and won two gold medals at the Southeast Asian Open Chess Championship, two gold, one silver and three bornze medals at the National Young Chess Championship.

7. Hoang Pham Tra Mi (1997), a pianist who won the gold medal at the Asian Piano Festival in South Korea and the first prize at the International Piano Competition in Singapore.

8. Nguyen Huu Nam (1987), director of a private mechanics and trade company in Chuong My district, invented a robot to rescue victims of fires, a cassava cutting machine and won the first prize of the creativeness competition for youth and children 2005 and the excellent worker title 2009.

9. Nguyen Thi Lua (1991), wrestler, won the silver medal at the 16th Asian Games, the silver medal at the Asian Young Wrestling Championship 2010 and many bronze medals at the Asian Young Wrestling Championship 2007, 2009, 2010.

10. Dao Thu Huong (1985), the first laureate of the Hanoi Teacher Training University 2010. She also works for a non-governmental organization and teaches English to blind people.

HCM City’s outstanding citizens

1. Nguyen Van Cai (1980), youth assistant of the Quang Trung High School, member of the Youth Union Standing Committee of Cu Chi district.

2. Le Quoc Dung (1984), chief of the quality control of the An Lac Label Printing JS Company.

3. Nguyen Binh Dinh (1982), in charge of Vovinam (Vietnamese martial art) at the Elite Sports Division of the HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

4. Huynh Van Tuan (1980), deputy chief of the Professional Rescue Team of the HCM City Firefighting Police Department.

5. Pham Tuan Vu (1989), member of the standing committee of the Students’ Association of the University for Natural Sciences, member of the standing committee of the HCM City Students’ Association, who won the Golden Globe Award 2009 for IT achievements, one of the ten outstanding young people of Vietnam 2009, a delegate of the National Patriotic Emulation Congress 2010.
