VietNamNet Bridge – On March 3 night HCM City police raided illegal motorbike races seizing 143 motorbikes in Binh Thanh District alone.

At 9 pm, the first group of racers were taken by police.

At nearly 12 am, hundreds of youngsters grouped up on the pavement of Phan Dang Luu Road to witness a race. When the police came, they ran away.

Some 15 minutes later, racers gathered at D2 Road to perform for thousands of young spectators who sat on their motorbikes on the pavement to watch the race. While they were watching two young racers, police came again. Both racers and spectators fled to alleys.

At 2 am, a “night storm” with nearly 500 motorbikes made a procession through Chu Van An road. Seeing police, they sped up to No Trang Long road. However, hundreds of police were waiting for them.

While hundreds of youngsters sat on the pavement to witness the race, police officers surrounded the area. Police seized 143 motorbikes in Binh Thanh district.

This is the second largest raid on illegal motorbike racers since the raid on October 24, 2010 in Binh Thanh District, with over 550 motorbikes seized.

In District 6, hundreds of young people grouped together to make a procession on motorbikes through Hau Giang – Cao Van Lau – Bai Say – Pham Dinh Ho roads at 11 pm. Seeing a police barrier at Cao Van Lau – Pham Van Chi intersection, they divided into smaller groups to move to other roads and finally convened at Thap Muoi road.

At nearly 1 am of March 6, police intercepted a group of 50 racers in Mai Xuan Thuong road.

At Mai Xuan Thuong – Le Quang Xung intersection, another group of racers were surrounded. A police officer had to fire into the air to suppress the racers who attacked the police. Police seized 63 motorbikes in District 6.

Police also raided more “night storms” in other districts, with a total of 50 motorbikes seized.

Illegal motorbike races are often organized during weekend nights or holiday nights in HCM City, with the participation of hundreds or even thousands of people.
