The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Vietnam on March 7 launched its Earth Hour
2011 campaign, with a lovely ambassador – singer Van Mai Huong.

Mai Huong was the second top competitor at the Vietnam Idol
2010.

“We hope that Mai Huong, with her youthfulness and
self-motivation, will inspire others, especially the youth in Vietnam, to take action. Young
people have been and will always be reliable fallow-travelers of the Earth Hour
and other actions for the environment,” said WWF Vietnam director Tran Minh
Hien.

The message of the Earth Hour in Vietnam is “Turn off the light for
60 minutes – take action for 365 days for climate change”. The Earth Hour 2011
will take place at 8.30 pm on Saturday, March 26.

City launched the Earth
Hour on March 7. More than 700 volunteers grouped up at the Le Thi Rieng park
in Tan Binh District in the morning of the day to prepare for the Earth Hour
2011.

From March 12, volunteers and ambassadors of the Earth Hour
will participate in various campaigns for the environment, which will end on
March 26.

“We will not only promote the campaign but will also live in
a “green” manner in the whole year,” said Truong Tri Truc Diem, Miss Fashion of
the Miss Earth 2007.

This year, the Earth Hour program calls for individuals,
businesses and governments in the world to take various actions to reduce the
volume of CO2 discharged into the environment during the year.

Earth Hour 2011 will be launched at 8.30 pm, March 26, many
cities in the world will turn off their lights in response to the program. The
program organizer also released the message: “Apart from turning off lights
during the Earth Hour, what can you do to make changes for the earth - our home?”

Earth Hour is a annual global event organized by WWF and is
held on the last Saturday of March, asking households and businesses to turn
off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour to
raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.

Earth Hour was conceived by WWF and The Sydney Morning
Herald in 2007, when 2.2 million residents of Sydney participated by turning off all
non-essential lights. Following Sydney’s
lead, many other cities around the world adopted the event in 2008.

Earth Hour 2010 was reportedly the biggest Earth Hour yet,
aiming to garner more than the one billion participant goal of 2009’s Earth
Hour. 126 countries participated in Earth Hour 2010.

In Vietnam,
the demand for electricity fell 500,000 kWh during Earth Hour 2010, which was
three times larger than the first time the country joined the event in 2009.
