Nearly 350 die and injured in traffic accidents during holiday

According to the Road
and Railway Traffic Police Bureau, 212 traffic accidents were recorded in Vietnam
during the April 30/May 1 holiday; claiming 172 lives and injuring 172 others.


During the holiday,
traffic police nationwide fined over 44,250 cases and seized 77 cars and over
6,000 motorbikes.

On April 30 and May
1 only, Hanoi’s
police reported 1.500 violations and issued fines worth VND360 million. Most of
these violations were driving without helmets, running red lights, and driving
in the wrong lane.

According to major
hospitals in Hanoi and HCM City,
the number of victims of traffic accidents who suffered brain injuries was high
during this time.

From April 30 to
May 2, the Vietnam – Germany Hospital in Hanoi received 209 traffic accident
victims, equivalent to the number of the last week of April (275 patients), and
accounting for 70-80 percent of the total number of patients who needed first
aid. Of all the patients, 120 suffered from brain injuries. An initial survey
showed that 40 of them didn’t wear helmets.

Cho Ray Hospital
in Ho Chi Minh City
admitted 323 victims of road accidents during the April 30 - May 3 holidays,
including 240 with brain injuries. Other hospitals around the city reported
receiving hundreds of victims of accidents, including 127 at the Gia Dinh People Hospital,
164 at People Hospital
and HCM City Hospital
for Trauma and Plastic Surgery with 148. Victims with brain injuries accounted
for 65-75 percent.

Earlier, 133 road
accidents were reported during the four-day Hung Kings death anniversary
holiday, with 115 deaths and 95 injury victims.
