Sleazy spaces under HCM City’s bridges
Published: 05/06/2011 05:00
The space under bridges in HCM City have become mobile markets, the home to homeless people, warehouses, public toilets and even the sites where drug addicts shoot heroin.
Vo Van Kiet avenue is the city’s best road. However the spaces under its overpasses are occupied by small traders.
The space under Ong Lanh Bridge in District 1, has become the site for fruit and vegetable traders. Their operation has hindered traffic flow. This is the longest bridge crossing Ben Nghe canal, linking Districts 1 and 4.
In the afternoon, this space is the place for youngsters to play cards and drink. Locals said that drug addicts also shoot heroin there at night.
Nguyen Van Cu Bridge, which connects District 4 and 8 to the city’s hub, is now the home of homeless people.
The Thu Thiem Bridge, which links the two banks of Saigon River, is the site for sightseeing and accompanied services.
The bridge foot in Binh Thanh district has become the site for rubbish gathering.
The space under some bridges becomes toilets.
The space under Nguyen Tri Phuong Bridge, which crosses Tau Hu canal, is used by vendors and parking lot for dust-casts.
