Construction workers at the Po Dam temple complex of the Cham people in Tuy Phong district in the central province of Binh Thuan have discovered two underground ancient walls while working to restore a collapsed tower in the complex.

The discovered walls, each 1.9m in height, are thought to be part of the stair leading to the tower.

Right after the walls were found, Binh Thuan Museum suspended the restoration works and joined with the Vietnam Archaeology Institute to conduct research on the walls.

“The two walls date back to the end of the 8th century, the same time as the complex with the same construction style with the towers around,” Nguyen Xuan Ly, director of the museum informed.

According to Dr. Le Dinh Phung from the Vietnam Archaeology Institute, the discovery will help scientists have a new look on the relic. He also added that based on initial evidence, the collapsed construction could be the main tower in the complex.

The Po Dam temple complex located in Phu Lac commune was built to worship Po Dam King who ruled the Champa Kingdom in the period between 1433 and 1460. It consisted of 6 temples, but currently, only 3 temples remain while 3 others have collapsed.
