VietNamNet Bridge – A special lesson took place on November 14 in the morning at Dong Da Secondary School in Hanoi. It was special because the lecturer was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Thien Nhan.

Minister Nhan, who is calling for a renovation in teaching method, likes emphasising that the most suitable renovation method is that students should be seen as the co-authors of the education process.

Nhan on November 14, also the day the competition on creative education was kicked off, started his lesson with a question: “Do you know why the Ministry of Education and Training chose Dong Da Secondary School as the place to launch the competition on creative education?”

A student answered: “Because our school is beautiful and clean. Because we have a good headmaster and teacher Do Thi Hong Ha.”

- You are right. Vietnam has 584 secondary schools, but only Dong Da Secondary School has the doctor-headmaster. Is Hong Ha young?

- Yes, she is.

- She is 53 years old, but you still find her young. She is not really young. Is she strong? No, she is not. She has experienced three operations. Is her salary high? No, it is not. The salaries of teachers are not high. So, Ha does not have three things, youth, health and a high salary. But she still can create.

When does she create? When she teaches students, at home, in hospitals. When she was on sick-beds, she still worked with computers to design a syllabus for mathematics. She had to learn English when she tried to build the software for 7^th class mathematics. Ha’s love for students was the main thing which helped Ha become a mirror for morality and creativeness. Ha well understands that helping students learn well means helps the country develop.

- You, the students, Nhan said, you have youth and good health. So you have to learn hard, so that you can get high incomes, can take care of your parents and grandparents, and make contributions to society’s development.

Do Thi Hong Ha, who has very quickly absorbed the idea by the leader of the education and training ministry on renovating the teaching method, said: “When I begin a new lecture, I always ask myself what I should do so that my students can receive and develop the very interesting things I want to share with them.”

The lesson ended with Ha’s words that educators, in every lesson, everywhere, from cities to rural areas, plain or mountainous areas, are trying to create a bright future for the country.
