US professor receives honorary doctorate from Hanoi National University

VietNamNet Bridge – The director of the Hanoi National University has conferred the honorary doctorate on Professor John Quelch in a recognition of the excellent achievements made by the professor in scientific research and his valuable contribution to cooperation with Vietnam. The ceremony took place in the afternoon of March 29, 2011.


The marketing expert who loves Vietnam

Professor John Quelch, now Dean of the China Europe International Business School CEIBS, is well known as an expert in marketing and branding and one of the 10 scholars who have had the biggest influences in the world in the field.

Being not only a scientist, a university administrator, an economist, a founder and leader of many enterprises, Professor John Quelch is also profound in the field of international cooperation, economic strategy, and international politics. Besides the activities in the marketing field, he also has special relations with the portraits who have influenced the world media and political circles in the US and in the world. To name a few, Mark J.Penn, political advisor in the election campaigns of Bill Clinton and 25 other US leaders, or John Smith, the CEO of BBC Worldwide are all people who Professor Quelch has worked with.

Professor John Quelch arrived in Vietnam in 2005 for the first time, when he had a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan and leaders of Quang Nam and Khanh Hoa provinces. In 2006, he arrived in Vietnam for the second time when he met Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and leaders of Vinh Phuc province. During the meetings, Professor John Quelch gave a lot of suggestions on doing marketing for national brands and localities.

Since 2005, the professor comes to Vietnam regularly every year to meet high ranking leaders and share experiences with the Vietnamese business community about his new finds in the marketing field.

The working session with the Vietnamese business community and the Hanoi National University from March 28 to March 30 is a part of his seventh trip to Vietnam.

Being highly appreciated by the Vietnamese business community, Professor John Quelch has joined the Advisory Board for the ranking of Vietnam’s 500 biggest Vietnamese enterprises (VNR500). He is now also the Honorary Chair of the Advisory Board of the Vietnam Economic Forum.

“My biggest ideas come from lecture halls and teaching”

In an effort to recognize the excellent achievements made by Professor John Quelch in his scientific research and his valuable contributions to the development of the cooperation and friendship relations with Vietnam, the director of the Hanoi National University has decided to confer an honorary doctorate degree on the professor.

“The Hanoi National University has the honor of conferring the honorary doctorate degree on Professor John Quelch as a way to express deep gratitude to the professor’s valuable contributions. I hope that Professor John Quelch, will be always a big friend who continue supporting and creating new cooperative opportunities for the Vietnamese business community and Vietnamese scientists, and especially to the Hanoi National University,” said Professor Mai Trong Nhuan, Director of the Hanoi National University at the ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, Professor John Quelch said he really is passionate about the educational environment and the domain of learning. This is the origin of his new ideas. “I can say that my biggest ideas come from lecture halls and teaching.

“From now on, when the Hanoi National University’s brand appears in my CV, and I will have to think about my responsibility,” he said

Prior to that, Professor John Quelch chaired an international workshop on marketing management in the recession period on the same day. He also had a seminar with economics schools’.

Professor John Quelch is the third scholar to receive an honorary doctorate from the Hanoi National University. The other two are Professor Tom Canon from Liverpool University and Professor Dr Susan Schwab, former US Trade Representative.
