The US Embassy in Vietnam Tuesday announced financial aid of almost US$29 million for projects to fight HIV/AIDS in Vietnam.

The first grant of more than $15 million will be allotted to the five-year “Social Marketing, Prevention and Supportive Services in Vietnam” project to reduce HIV prevalence among the most-at-risk population by promoting treatments and services, increasing safer behavior practices and reducing the initiation of drug use.

The second project costing almost $10 million will support the Vietnamese government, civil society and local networks to undertake policy and advocacy actions to improve HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment.

The third $3-million grant will provide technical services for workplace-based prevention as well as employment and support services for high risk individuals.

The contracts will be implemented through the US Agency for International Development under the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

Through the projects, PEPFAR will work to create job opportunities and other supporting services for HIV/AIDS carriers and those considered to be at risk of infection.

Since 2004, the agency has granted more than $232 million to support the provision of comprehensive HIV prevention, care and treatment services in Vietnam.
