This week is the Nutrition Advisory Week for Public Health in the three cities of Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City until next Saturday.

The event, organized by the National Nutrition Institute and sponsored by Dutch Lady Vietnam, kicked off on Saturday and aims to provide nutrition and dietary information to the community, develop advisory volunteering, and support families facing difficulties in some localities.

After the week, 200 volunteers - mainly students and recent graduates of medicine - will give nutritional advice at people’s homes and offer gifts to orphanages and over 60 disadvantaged families.

Up to 33.9 percent of children under five in Vietnam are malnourished, according to the National Nutrition Institute.

The malnutrition rate in secondary schools is 20 percent, and the zinc deficiency ratio is 30 percent, while 34 percent of children under five and 20 percent of school children between the ages of 6-10 suffer anemia, the institute said.
