The yogurt that sent 133 Mekong Delta children to the hospital with severe cooking poisoning last month was tainted with harmful bacteria, a local health official has reported.

Tran Thanh Thao, vice director of the Tien Giang Province Health Department, said testing showed the yogurt had been contaminated with coliform and Staphylococcus aurerus – bacteria that commonly cause food poisoning.

The bacteria are sometimes found in food that has not been stored properly. The health department has fined the yogurt maker for violating food hygiene and safety regulations.

The department has also asked the Go Cong Town Preventive Medicine Center to destroy all yogurt involved in the case.

On October 20, 133 children from the Ward 4 Nursery School in Go Cong were hospitalized after eating yogurt made by the principal’s child.

The children were released from the hospital on October 21.

The principal’s child has been making yogurt and supplying it to the school for 10 years without incident, according to the provincial administration.

This case is the largest food poisoning incident in Tien Giang this year.
