The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Friday said the entry of seeds and other living organisms into Vietnam must be regulated to protect native species of flora and fauna.

Speaking at a conference on the national action plan for biodiversity, ministry officials said it is important to restore and develop specific-use forests as envisaged in the plan, and restore 50 percent of mountain forests that have been chopped down.

Effective protection would be provided for rare and threatened animals and plants, they said.

The marshes and marine areas of national and international significance that are conserved would be expanded to more than 1.2 million hectares, and 200,000 hectares of mangrove forests would be restored, they added.
