The Ministry of Health’s Food Hygiene and Safety Department and the Vietnam Standards and Consumer Protection Association plan to jointly test samples of milk sold around the country next month.

Head of the department, Nguyen Cong Khan, said the samples would also be tested for other essential ingredients other than protein. He said health authorities would try to weed out suppliers of poor-quality milk products.

The campaign follows a finding released last Friday by the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Hygiene and Public Health that 37 of 99 milk samples on the market it had tested had protein content up to 30 times lower than indicated on their labels.

A dairy quality expert speculated that those producers could have mixed a protein-free starch and sugar and sold it as milk.
