A Vietnamese doctor removed a choledochal cyst from a two-year-old Taiwanese girl as part of a surgery demonstration at an international medical conference earlier this month, a local hospital announced Sunday.

Vietnam National Hospital of Pediatrics Director Pham Thanh Liem performed the three-and-halfhour laparoscopic surgery at the 17th Asian Congress of Surgery in Taipei after the young patient had been diagnosed with a congenital biliary abnormality, said the hospital’s spokesman.

The girl is now in good condition without any post-operative side-effects and is to be released from the Mackey Memorial Hospital soon.

The hospital spokesman said Dr. Liem had gained much respect from doctors and experts attending the congress as the operation he completed is considered the most complex of laparoscopic surgeries performed on children.

Doctors from around the world made presentations at the two-day conference beginning March 20.

Vietnamese experts gave talks on complex liver disease treatments focusing on bile and thorax problems in children that can be treated with endoscopic surgery.

A choledochal cyst is a congenital abnormality of the bile duct that causes abnormal enlargement of the passageway. Different types of choledochal cysts can be found depending on the location and type of enlargement. The majority of choledochal cysts are found in children.
