More than 41,400 people have died of AIDS in Vietnam since the country recorded its first HIV case in 1990, the Vietnam HIV/AIDS Prevention Center has reported.

More than 29,100 were currently living with the affliction, the center said at a conference Monday.

Vietnam has 106,037 citizens living with HIV that has not developed into full-blown AIDS, said representatives at the conference in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue city.

The conference focused on the “Policies and plans for HIV/AIDS prevention in Vietnam” project and was held by the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics and Public Administration in cooperation with Boston University and US-owned Health Policy Initiative in Vietnam.
