Doctors at Bac Lieu General Hospital suspect a patient from the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang died of avian flu on Friday.

Hospital Director Tran Van Khanh said Saturday doctors suspected the H5N1 avian influenza virus because 26-year-old Ly Thi Hang, who died Friday, had common bird flu symptoms such as headache, tiredness, cough and lung problems when she was admitted to the hospital in the delta province of Bac Lieu on Monday.

A person familiar with the matter said Hang had eaten sick ducks about a month ago.

Hospital workers have sterilized the room where Khanh stayed and have also taken samples for testing.

The Soc Trang Province Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has directed agencies to sterilize and inspect Khanh’s house.

Vietnamese authorities have confirmed three bird-flu deaths so far this year.

On Friday, authorities in the Mekong province of Hau Giang announced they had snuffed out a bird flu outbreak that at one point affected 11 communes and towns in the locality.
