The US government has doubled its funding for environmental health and remediation in Vietnam with an additional US$3 million, the American embassy said in a press release issued Friday.

The extra funding, which will come on top of $3 million provided in 2007 for dioxin mitigation and health projects, is intended for environmental remediation of dioxin contamination and related health activities.

About one-third of the now $6 million is for health related activities that are already underway.

The rest is for environmental remediation activities, including an impact assessment currently being conducted by the US Agency for International Development and Vietnamese authorities.

Ongoing plans are to develop environmentally sound designs and remove dioxin from soil and sediment near Da Nang airport.

Since 1989, the American people have contributed more than $46 million to support Vietnamese people with disabilities, according to the statement.
