About 100 people from around the country were honored for regularly donating blood at a festival in Hanoi Sunday.

The festival for World Blood Donor Day initiated by the World Health Assembly attracted more than 4,000 volunteer campaigners and nearly 2,000 people who had registered to donate their blood.

Event organizers – the Ministry of Health and the Vietnam Red Cross – expect to collect between 800-1,000 units to help with early-summer blood shortages.

WHO statistics show that every day Vietnam needs approximately 5,000 blood units while blood banks supply less than a third of that.
