Five men in Dong Thap Province’s Sa Dec Town died earlier this week after consuming locally made medicinal wine, Vo Cong Doan, chief of the provincial Bureau for Food Safety and Hygiene, said Thursday.

The men, residents of the town’s Ward 3, were in their forties and fifties.

According to Doan, three men had purchased a type of rice wine from a local eatery on Tuesday and suffered headaches and nausea after drinking it. They were brought to Sa Dec General Hospital where one of the men died later that day. The two others died the next day along with another pair of men who had also consumed the alcohol.

The cooking safety bureau has taken a sample of the wine to analyze, said Doan.
