Ho Chi Minh City Health Department inspectors took samples of Tan Hiep Phat Company beverage products on Monday to check if they match hygiene standards claimed on their labels.

The result of the examination will be released next week, inspectors said.

The samples of Tra Xanh Khong Do, sweetened green tea and Barley tea, were taken randomly from shops in HCMC’s District 3 and Binh Thanh District.

This action followed last week’s discovery by the police of 26 tons of expired flavoring agents at a warehouse owned by the company in Binh Thanh District.

They later found about 1,200 liters of expired flavoring agents at another storage facility of the firm in Binh Duong Province.

Tran Qui Thanh, general director of Tan Hiep Phat Co., told Thanh Nien that the expired materials had been abandoned for a long time because they weren’t suitable for the market.

A survey from newswire VnExpress.net showed that regular customers of Tan Hiep Phat beverage products were shocked by the discovery.

“Tan Hiep Phat disregards hundreds of its customers if they use expired flavoring materials in their products,” said Tra Giang, a visitor at the Hanoi supermarket.

Tan Hiep Phat’s soft drinks include the familiar brands - Number 1 energy drink, Tra Xanh Khong Do sweetened green tea, Barley tea and Dr. Thanh sweetened herbal tea.

Thanh later told reporters that the flavoring materials had been destroyed but refused to produce any evidence.
