Spurious liquor caused the deaths of 10 people in the Mekong Delta’s Dong Thap Province from June 16-22, the province’s Department of Health said Friday.

The 12 samples of liquor taken from Chau Thanh District and Sa Dec Town were found to contain methanol at 27-80 times higher than permitted levels, Doan Van Hong, the department’s director said.

In addition, the four people who survived had a very high level of methanol in their blood, he said, adding that they were among the six people who had been hospitalized after drinking the local wine.
