More than 60 percent of diabetes patients in Vietnam are diagnosed only after the disease has caused organ damage, a meeting in Ho Chi Minh City heard Tuesday.

The meeting, which was attended by more than 400 local and foreign professors and experts in endocrinology and sponsored by Germany-based company Bayer Schering Pharma, discussed the management of type 2 diabetes in patients.

The meeting heard that Vietnam has more than 4.5 million diabetes patients – with a large proportion of them young city-dwellers (about 4 percent of the urban population has the disease).

More than 65 percent of diabetes sufferers in Vietnam are never diagnosed, according to experts.
