US runs blood safety workshop for military medical centers

Laboratory officers and technicians currently working at different Vietnamese military hospitals are attending a US-funded workshop on blood safety that opened in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho Monday.

In the three-day workshop, funded by the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, the participants are being trained in “best practices” in international an national standards of blood safety by technical experts from US Pacific Command, the US Armed Forces Research Institute of Medicine Sciences, and leading military hospitals in Vietnam, the US Embassy said in statement.

The US Department of Defense and the Military Medicine Department of the Vietnamese Ministry of Defense are conducting a blood safety program at four military blood transfusion centers.

The program aims to collect, screen, and provide safe blood to meet the needs in the region, for both military and civilian communities.

Since 2004, the US government ha provided more than US$320 million for comprehensive HIV/AIDS prevention, care, treatment, and support activities in Vietnam.
