Another 118 cases of the influenza A (H1N1) virus were recorded on Sunday, raising the country’s tally to 2,014 cases since the epidemic first hit in May, according to the Ministry of Health.

With 67 new cases recorded in the southern region on Sunday, 36 in the central region, and 15 in the Central Highlands, the latest figures outnumbered Saturday’s count of 104 new cases – at the time the most ever recorded in the country in a single day.

Hanoi-based Viet Duc University Hospital Vice Director Nguyen Van Thach, meanwhile, said Sunday that a nurse was waiting for the results of an H1N1 test – the first health worker suspected of being infected with the flu in the northern region.

In the southern region, nearly 20 health workers have contracted the illness, which has stricken over 227,000 people and killed 2,146 globally, according to the health ministry.

In Vietnam, two have died from H1N1 and 1,198 have made a full recovery.
