The second outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Quang Binh has affected nearly 40 cows and buffalos.

The central province’s agriculture department said on Tuesday that authorities in Truong Xuan Commune and related agencies have taken measures to prevent the spread of the highly infectious viral disease, including a ban on transporting meat out of the neighborhood.

Quang Binh’s first outbreak last month infected over 100 cows and buffalos.

Since last month, the disease, which hit Vietnam hard in 2006 with tens of thousands of cattle being sickened, has recurred in central and northern provinces like Quang Ngai, Quang Tri and Tuyen Quang.

In the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang, meanwhile, 20 sacks containing 1,000 dead chickens have been found drifting along a river in Tan Binh Commune, Nguyen Hien Trung, head of the local Animal Health Department said on Monday afternoon.

The dead chickens were confirmed to belong to seven local households, Trung said, adding that they were unable to detect the cause of death because the fowls had disintegrated badly.

However, the department has carried out all preventive measures against bird flu, including spraying chemicals at the households’ coops and inoculating over 49,000 chickens in three districts, he said.
