A nine-year-old boy from Dong Nai Province died of influenza A on Wednesday, becoming the fifth H1N1 related death in the country, the Health Ministry said.

Tho Luc developed a fever on August 29 and was hospitalized last Wednesday at a district hospital and then transferred to a general hospital in the south central Binh Thuan Province, where he was living with his parents, who are farmers.

Last Thursday, Luc was brought to the Dong Nai Children’s Hospital unconscious and was diagnosed with encephalitis and meningitis, said Nguyen Huy Nga, head of the Preventive Health and Environment Department under the Health Ministry.

He later tested positive for the H1N1 virus at the hospital.

The Health Ministry reported 110 new cases of influenza A, also known as swine flu, on Wednesday, raising the country’s tally to 4,060 including 3,206 who have been discharged from hospitals after full recovery.

Of the four previous deaths recorded so far, three have been in Ho Chi Minh City and one in the central coastal province of Khanh Hoa.

On Monday, a 51-year-old man in HCMC died of swine flu, just four days after the third death in the country, also a city resident.

Also Wednesday, the city Health Department reported two more swine flu outbreaks, at Quang Trung High School in Go Vap District and the Polytechnics University dormitory in District 10.

Lam Dong Province in the Central Highlands has reported 37 schools infected with the virus, Phu Yen Province in the south central region has eight infected schools while Quang Ngai Province has expressed concerns about the first possible outbreak at one of its schools.
