A woman with swine flu has died in Ho Chi Minh City, the third known death related to the H1N1 virus in Vietnam so far, the city’s health department announced on Saturday night.

The 56-year-old from Binh Thanh District was admitted to Gia Dinh People’s Hospital on Thursday with a fever of around 40 degrees Celsius.

She was diagnosed with critical pneumonia, respiratory failure and a blood infection, and was disorientated.

The patient tested positive for the influenza A (H1N1) virus on Friday and was given the antiviral drug Tamiflu but died later in the day.

The first two deaths, both women, were recorded in HCMC and Khanh Hoa on the central coast.

So far 2,483 cases of H1N1 infection have been reported in Vietnam, including 187 on Saturday, the Ministry of Health said.
