Some 40 out of 48 tons of unclean chicken legs found in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday have since been distributed on the market, according to a local animal health center.

The meat, imported from Poland by the local Viet My Company, was found at a local cold storage facility by an inspection team from Binh Chanh District in cooperation with HCMC Animal Health Agency.

The products were found violating Vietnamese regulations that all hair and skin be removed thoroughly.

A representative from Viet My Company told the inspectorate that four tons of meat products had been lost at the port when the products arrived in August, while 40.3 tons were sold to a business in District 8 since Wednesday.

Upon initially discovering the unclean products, inspectors asked the company not to sell any until further instructions were issued, but they did not confiscate any of the goods.

At the moment they have yet to take samples from the remaining 3.7 tons of chicken legs as the company said they had already been sold and were no longer Viet My property, said Dinh Thi Hong Hanh, head of Binh Chanh District’s animal health center.

The agency has asked several Viet My customers for meetings and has ordered the company to write a report explaining why they sold the products without having them tested for diseases, according to Hanh.

Under Vietnamese law, all meat has to be screened for diseases before distribution.

On the same day the inspectorate found that another 24-ton-batch of chicken legs also imported by Viet My had been distributed prior to tests by the local animal health agency.

Binh Chanh District’s Animal Health Agency has reported the cases to the HCMC Animal Health Agency for further evaluation.

The exposure of 48 tons of unclean chicken legs at Viet My Company has prompted the Animal Health Agency Zone VI, which oversees the region from the southeastern province of Ninh Thuan to Ben Tre Province in the Mekong Delta, to inspect meat and meat-products imported from Poland.

As many of Polish meat products have already been found with contaminations, the agency on Thursday asked the Vietnam Department of Animal Health to issue restrict the licensing of frozen Polish meat imports.
