The Ho Chi Minh City inspectorate on Tuesday found six tons of moldy chicken legs imported from Poland at a local storage facility, but their owner was yet to be identified.

This was part of a 15-ton-batch of chicken legs brought into the store a couple of days ago, a representative from the Hoang Bon Storage facility in Binh Chanh District told local police, adding another nine tons had already been taken out.

Further investigations have been launched into the consignment.

Forty-eight tons of unhygienic chicken legs imported from Poland by Viet My Company were found last week, prompting Animal Health Agency Zone VI, which oversees the region from the southeastern province of Ninh Thuan to Ben Tre Province in the Mekong Delta, to inspect meat and meat-products imported from Poland.

As many inspected products have already been found contaminated, the agency asked the Vietnam Department of Animal Health to issue restrictions on the licensing of frozen Polish meat imports.

As part of its efforts to combat unclean meat imports, Vietnam Department of Animal Health has regulated that from October 1 all imported meat be tested at ports before customs clearance instead of being sent to importers’ storage facilities first and tested later.
