The Ho Chi Minh City Pasteur Institute has successfully produced a toolkit set to test for the influenza A (H1N1) virus, an official from the Ministry of Science and Technology said at a meeting Wednesday.

Developed in cooperation with Vietnam Institute of Biotechnology, the set can show results within 3-4 hours at the most and may be 50 percent cheaper than imported ones, said Le Minh Sat deputy head of Department of Science and Technology of Economic and Technical Industries.

Sat said the set has undergone trials at some southern hospitals and is expected to be registered with the Ministry of Health after Tet (the Lunar New Year Festival which falls in February this year).

The health ministry reported two new flu outbreaks in the northern provinces of Hai Phong and Bac Kan.

Since it was first detected here swine flu has attacked at least 11,166 people and claimed 56 lives, according to the ministry.

As Tet approaches, the risk of being inflicted with H1N1 is getting higher due to increased travel between localities, the ministry warned.
