Eight percent of Vietnamese are battling infertility, Vietnamnet quoted Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Viet Tien as saying Monday.

At a recent conference on shortcomings in infertility treatment, Tien, who is also director of the National Hospital for Obstetrics and Gynecology, said this was an alarming rate.

Vietnam’s increasing rate of infertility was mainly caused by environmental pollution, toxic substances in cooking, late marriages, and unhealthy lifestyles like drug abuse and promiscuity.

Meanwhile, Tu Du Obstetrics Hospital reported that 40 percent of infertility problems were detected in men, 40 percent in women, and 10 percent in both partners.

Causes of the remaining 10 percent of cases were unknown, according to the country’s leading obstetrics hospital.

While Vietnam uses the world’s most advanced techniques to treat infertility, the country’s success rate in treatment is merely 30-35 percent, Vietnamnet quoted experts at the conference as saying.
