Medical expenses for victims of traffic accidents would be paid for by the
medical insurance fund, said director of Medical Insurance Department, Tong Thi
Song Huong.

The Finance and Health
ministries recently issued a document stating that costs for those with
insurance would be paid for without waiting for the results of any police
investigations.

The insurance office
would be responsible for liasing with traffic police to investigate the causes
of accidents.

If police
investigations found that traffic law violations had been the cause of the
accidents, the victims would have to pay for medical treatment themselves.

Inconclusive
investigations would mean victims would still be eligible for insurance
payments.

At present, victims of
traffic accidents do not receive medical expenses before the results of police
investigations are released.

The new regulation
will come into effect in March this year.
