Vietnam’s capital tightens control in face of E.coli threats
Published: 12/06/2011 05:00
Hanoi’s health department has tightened the control of people entering the capital via international flights in an attempt stop the Europe’s deadly Escherichia coli (E.coli) outbreak, the government website reported Friday. Any person found with symptoms of fever and acute diarrhea needs to be isolated and rushed to hospital for treatment, the department told the Center for International Health Inspection. Current local patients with such symptoms, especially those with acute diarrhea suspected to be caused by E.coli, will be put under close observation as well, according to the website. Meanwhile, the city’s Food Hygiene and Safety Agency joined hands with related agencies to tighten the check of cooking hygiene and safety, and the supervision of places supplying and trading fresh food as well as street food sellers. Hanoi made the move about one week after several local health officials warned that Vietnamese vegetables face high risk of catching the lethal E. coli outbreak as farmers mostly use sewage and muddy water taken from streams, lake and rivers, to irrigate the crops. Since last month, the bacterium has killed 30 people and infected another 3,000 across the Europe, mainly Germany, AFP reported. Germany is still investigating the cause of contamination.
