The governments of ASEAN countries should take appropriate measures to narrow the gap between production cost and consumer price of food, and develop long-term strategies to keep food prices stable.

The seminar was held in Hanoi on Oct. 21 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the ASEAN Secretariat as past of the programme of the 30th meeting of the ASEAN Ministers on Agriculture and Forestry.

The strategy and framework of action on food security in the ASEAN region for the 2009-2013 is directed toward the goal of promoting food production in the region to help farmers improve their economic conditions, so that regional countries can ensure sustainable food security and successfully cope with food crisis.

Juergen Voegele, Director of the World Bank’s Agriculture and Rural Development Department, said that the WB pledged to aid countries having good policy to ensure food supply for poor people.

He also urged the ASEAN Secretariat to push agricultural research in order to increase food production in the region.

Many participants noted that in addition to their commitment to regional food security, regional countries should review their programmes on social security including food price subsidy for the poor and improve their policies regarding the production and distribution of food.
