VietNamNet BridgePrime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung arrived in Hakou, Hainan Province on Oct. 20, beginning his four-day official visit to China at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao.

This is the fist visit to China by the PM since he took his current job, during which he will also attend the seventh Asia-Europe Meeting, scheduled for October 24-25 in Beijing.

The PM told local officials that Hainan and Vietnam have conditions for the development of trade and investment cooperation as both sides share the Tonkin Gulf waters.

Vietnam wants to enhance ties with Hainan through cooperation with the province’s newly-built economic zone and seaport Yangpu, the PM said, proposing that Hainan open shipping routes to Vietnamese localities, including Ho Chi Minh City, northern Hai Phong City and central Da Nang City.

The Vietnamese PM noted that China is Vietnam’s largest trade partner, with two-way trade reaching 16 billion USD last year and estimated 21 billion USD this year. The figure is expected to increase to 25 billion USD by 2010.

On the afternoon of the same day, PM Dung met with Hainan provincial Party Committee Secretary Wei Liucheng, who spoke highly of the significance of the visit, saying that it was a vivid manifestation of the comprehensive and strategic partnership between Vietnam and China.

The host affirmed that Hainan will further boost cooperative ties in the areas of economic, trade and tourism with localities of Vietnam, making practical contributions to fostering the comprehensive and strategic partnership between the two Parties and the two nations.

Coming back to the island of Hainan, PM Dung noted with pleasure that the island, established as a province 20 years ago, has been emerging as a new sea resort in Asia, known as “China’s Hawaii” by international tourists.

Hainan Province welcomes 20 million holidaymakers per annum, posts an annual economic growth rate of 11.4 percent, and enjoys gross domestic product (GDP) of 2,000 USD per capita.

The PM said he was pleased to witness strong progress in the comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and China. He said Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh and Party General Secretary and State President Hu Jintao reached an agreement of historic significance on lifting the bilateral ties to the scale of comprehensive and strategic cooperative partnership during the Vietnamese leader’s visit to China in May.

The exchange and cooperation between ministries, sectors and localities of the two countries, including the relationship between Hainan and Vietnam’s Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh and Nghe An, have constantly expanded and seen practical results.

The government leader took this occasion to praise Hainan ’s cooperation and assistance in the rescue of Vietnamese fishermen in distress in the recent part.

He also spoke highly of the signing of a memorandum of understanding on economic and trade cooperation between the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade and Hainan Province and expressed his wish that the Chinese province promote exchange with Vietnam’s localities.

PM Dung said he hoped that, with major economic potentials, tourism development experiences and advantageous location, Hainan will actively expand cooperative ties to all fields with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Vietnam in particular.
