Vietnam calls for improved peacebuilding efforts

The statement was made by Ambassador Le Luong Minh, Permanent Representative of Vietnam at the Debate of Security Council on Report of the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) in New York on October 21.

Ambassador Minh commended the efforts undertaken by the PBC in implementing its mandates and core functions stipulated by General Assembly and Security resolutions.

He said he was satisfied with the tangible results of the peacebuilding process achieved by PBC-supported countries, including Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau, the Central African Republic and Burundi .

Minh went on by saying that the PCB should strengthen its organisation and improve working methods, coordinative mechanisms, and policies of mobilising and using its resources in the coming time.

The Vietnamese diplomat also emphasised the importance of indentifying the appropriate relationships between the PBC with the organs and bodies of the UN system, including the General Assembly, the Security Council and the Economic and Social Council, regional organisations, Bretton Woods institutions, local governments and the international community so as to maximise impact on the ground and avert possible overlapping and duplication.

He said that the UN and the international community should support beneficiary countries in their socio-economic development, thus helping address the root causes of conflicts and create the foreground for lasting peace and sustained reconstruction.

After affirming the core role and responsibility of the countries in peacebuilding activities, Ambassador Minh said that the international community’s assistance should be implemented with due respect for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, bearing in mind the specificities and interests of the country in consideration.
