Vietnamese and Chinese leaders have achieved an understanding on measures to enrich and deepen the strategic and comprehensive partnership between the two sides. | |||||||
The declaration was made in the Vietnam-China Joint Statement issued last Saturday at the end of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s four-day official visit to China. The statement said that the leaders reached a consensus to continue expanding and deepening a cooperative partnership, especially when the world’s economy and politics have been experiencing complicated developments. Leaders on both sides also agreed on measures to deploy the Vietnam-China comprehensive partnership, including the continuation of cordial contacts between top Party and state leaders. The leaders are to complete a coordinating mechanism to develop links between different government ministries and branches and execute cooperation agreements between diplomatic services, defense, police and security forces. They emphasized that bilateral economic cooperation needs to be furthered for the two countries to reach US$25 billion in two-way trade by 2010. To meet the target, the leaders supported advancing business investment, establishing a working group on trade-economy cooperation, and increasing the exchange of information and coordination in the fight against smuggling, counterfeit commodities and trade fraud. The leaders agreed to sign a protocol on land border demarcation and land marker placement, and an agreement on land border management regulations to promote peace, stability, cooperation and long-lasting friendship. They agreed to strengthen cooperation in carrying out oceanographic research, protecting the environment, forecasting weather conditions, exploring and exploiting oil and gas, organizing search and rescue work at sea and visits by navy ships, and building a mechanism for direct information exchange between the two armies.
