Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development signed an agreement in Hanoi Wednesday to promote traditional crafts in Vietnam’s rural areas.

The three-year project, which will focus on the four northwestern mountainous provinces of Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Hoa Binh and Son La, aims to develop a model for rural industry development through joint trials, discussions and policy-making.

The goal of the project is to make rural craft producers more competitive by improving the network of relevant government agencies and social organizations and providing support.

“JICA would like to show how rural industry, especially in remote areas, can have its own strategy and action to grow in a sustainable manner,” JICA’s chief representative Motonori Tsuno said.
