Vietnam, Mongolia to cement friendship, advance economic ties

This agreement was reached during the talks between the visiting Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet and his Mongolian counterpart Nambaryn Enkhbayar in the capital of Ulaanbaatar on October 30.

In a friendly atmosphere of mutual understanding, the two state leaders informed each other of the current situation in their respective countries and exchanged views on a number of matters relating to bilateral ties, as well as a range of regional and international issues.

The two presidents said that despite their geographical distance, the Vietnamese and Mongolian people have always been close to one another and their traditional cooperation has developed steadily since the two countries established diplomatic ties more than half a century ago.

In particular, they said, over recent years, the regular exchange of visits by high-ranking officials has helped to increase mutual understanding, creating new momentum for the continued development of cooperative ties between the two countries.

The two presidents were unanimous to maintain the tradition of exchanging visits by high-ranking delegations, as well as delegations at the ministerial and local levels in order to cement and advance the traditional friendship that exists between the two countries.

The two governments have always encouraged enterprises in their countries to actively seek opportunities of cooperation in areas that serve the strengths of the two sides.

The Mongolian side said it welcomes Vietnamese businesses who are willing to invest in mineral exploitation, urban infrastructure construction, agricultural product processing and pharmaceutical production in the country.

The two sides agreed to coordinate in addressing goods transport issue in order to facilitate the exchange of goods between the two countries, helping to increase their two-way trade value to 10 million USD by 2010.

They also agreed to increase cultural exchanges in celebration of the 55th anniversary of their diplomatic ties, scheduled for 2009, as well as increasing coordination and mutual support at a number of regional and international organisations and forums.

While affirming that Vietnam is one of its closest friends, the Mongolian president hoped that Vietnam would become a bridge for increased cooperation between Mongolia and other Southeast Asian countries.

President Nguyen Minh Triet took the occasion to announce that Vietnam has decided to present 1,000 tonnes of rice and ambulances worth 300,000 USD to the people of Mongolia. Also Vietnam agreed to sell 20,000 tonnes of rice to Mongolia at its original price.

The Mongolian President N. Enkhbayar placed great value on the Vietnamese State leader’s visit, saying that it will help to further strengthen future friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

President Triet invited President Enkhbayar to visit Vietnam in the future and the Mongolian leader accepted the invitation.

Following the talks, the Vietnamese and Mongolian Presidents witnessed the singing of a memorandum of understanding on economic and industrial cooperation between Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of External Relations of Mongolia.

Speaking at a press briefing on the same day, President Enkhbayar expressed his belief that the Vietnamese State leader’s official visit to Mongolia is a new milestone that will contribute to developing the two countries’ friendship and cooperation even more strongly in the future.

The two leaders agreed to raise bilateral ties in the economics, trade and investment sectors to the same level as their current political relationship.

Later that afternoon, State President Nguyen Minh Triet met with Chairman of the Mongolian Parliament Damdin Demberel, and first Deputy Prime Minister Norovyn Altanhuyag.

At these meeting, President Triet expressed his pleasure at visiting the beautiful country of Mongolia, and witnessing the outstanding achievements the Mongolian people have recorded over recent years.

He informed the Mongolian chairman of parliament and first deputy PM of the results of his talks with President Nambaryn Enkhbayar and discussed a range of measures to promote Vietnam-Mongolia friendship and cooperation in a number of areas.

Chairman Damdin Demberel and Deputy PM Norovyn Altanhuyag welcomed President Triet’s visit, expressing their belief that the visit would further promote the two countries’ friendly and cooperative ties.

They affirmed that the Mongolian parliament and government would strive to expand its cooperation with Vietnam .

Later the same day, President Triet and his delegation visited senior secondary school No. 14 in Ulaanbaatar . He heaped praise on the school’s achievements and stressed that the school, named after President Ho Chi Minh – a great Vietnamese leader who laid the foundation for Vietnam-Mongolian relations, is a wonderful manifestation of the two countries’ friendship.

He presented 20 computers, 10 printers and 50,000 USD to the school.

In the evening, President Nambaryn Enkhbayar and his wife hosted a banquet in honour of President Triet, his wife and the other distinguished Vietnamese guests.
