The ambassador said Vietnam is always grateful to its international friends like Madeleine Riffaud, who have supported the country in the wartime as well as in its present cause of national development.

As a correspondent of L’Humanite newspaper in the southern Vietnam battlefield, Riffaud wrote a lot of articles and features on the “people’s war” of the Vietnamese nation, particularly her book titled “In the maquis Vietcong”, which helped readers across the world understand what gave a small Vietnam the strength to gain victory over the imperialist America .

Riffaud’s engagement with Vietnam began in 1946 when she met with President Ho Chi Minh in Paris in an interview, after which she vowed to devote her life for Vietnam with her “pen and heart”.

In recognition of her contributions to the country, the State and Party of Vietnam have honoured her with several awards, the most recent of which was the Friendship Medal in August 2005 on the occasion of Vietnam’s National Day (September 2).

At her age of 84, Riffaud still actively supports the movement to struggle for the rights of the Vietnamese victims of Agent Orange.

She said she had been invited to take part in three films on President Ho Chi Minh, one of them titled Ho Chi Minh intime, with other Vietnam’s French friends, such as Alain Ruscio and Raymond Aubrac.
