At a press briefing that announced the start of Czech’s as EU President in Hanoi on Dec. 19, Czech’s Ambassador to Vietnam Michal Kral said his country would also focus on some other programmes in its partnership with Vietnam. The EU’s policies to Vietnam, meanwhile, will remain unchanged, he added.

The ambassador called upon Vietnam to continue uphold its role as a coordinator in the negotiation on the signing of the ASEAN-EU Free Trade Agreement and boost its regional integration.

According to French Ambassador Herve Bolot, EU’s committed ODA to Vietnam keeps increasing year after year. The union’s commitment of 800 million Euro in ODA to Vietnam in 2009 showed donors’ belief in the Southeast Asian country, he said.

Vietnam is capable of effectively using ODA, compared to other countries, the ambassador said, citing that in 2007 the country successfully disbursed 90 percent of total France ’s ODA funding of 221 million Euro in 2007.

On average, Vietnam disbursed 74 percent of ODA capital funded by the union in 2007 and 80 percent in 2008.

In its capacity as the EU President, over the last six months, France has provided EU’s members with information about Vietnam to help them better understand the country’s political, economic and cultural situation as well as external policies.

“We hope all the EU member countries will raise a common voice in expanding cooperation with Vietnam, especially in politics and economy,” said ambassador Bolot.

The Czech Republic’s EU presidency term will witness the opening of the next Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), which is slated for May 2009 in Hanoi.
