Vietnam needs to gather all tools at its disposal to prevent a recession, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said at a two-day conference starting in Ho Chi Minh City Thursday.

“If we allow sluggish production, many people will lose their jobs and then our social security policies will not be able to cope,” the prime minister told the conference on the National Assembly’s economic development resolutions and estimates for the state budget in 2009.

Minister of Planning and Investment Vo Hong Phuc mentioned several solutions, including: making efforts to stimulate production, trade, exports, investment and consumption; ensuring high social security benefits; and working for economic growth of 6.5 percent next year.

The prime minister said all central and local state agencies should “update the residents on all steps” to ensure the public supported the measures.

Meanwhile, local government leaders at the conference asked the central government to invest more in infrastructure in rural areas.

They also asked for the US$1 billion economic stimulus package to be disbursed soon to assist domestic trade and create more jobs.
