Hanoi urged to maintain economic growth in 2009

| VietNamNet Bridge - Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has urged ministries and agencies to work closely with the capital city of Hanoi to iron out snags in production and business activities, helping it meet development targets set for 2009.
At a working session with municipal authorities on December 17, Mr Dung pointed out challenges facing the country and Hanoi in 2009 and said the city should make a greater effort to prevent a period of stagnation and decline, maintain growth and ensure social welfare. He suggested that the city launch exemplary role model campaigns on economic development, speed up the implementation of capital construction projects, especially those for its 1,000th anniversary in 2010 and accelerate administrative reform to attract investment, while providing preferential mechanisms and policies for disadvantaged areas. He asked the municipal authorities to draw lessons from its weaknesses in doing urban planning and management work, disbursing capital investment, easing traffic congestion, reducing environmental pollution and streamlining cumbersome administrative procedures. He reminded Hanoi to pay due attention to agriculture and rural development, generate more jobs for its residents, maintain social security and traffic order and ensure cooking safety and hygiene. He assured that the Government and ministries will create the best possible conditions for the capital city to develop into a political, administrative, cultural and educational centre for the entire nation. Despite the domestic and global economic difficulties, the enlarged capital city achieved a GDP growth rate of 10.58 percent in 2008 and has set a GDP target of between 9.5-10 percent for 2009.
