Legislator calls for US GSP status

| VietNamNet Bridge – National Assembly Vice Chairman Uong Chu Luu has called upon the US to apply the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) to Vietnam.
While stressing the US market as ripe for further development for the export of Vietnamese commodities, the lawmaker said he hoped that economic, trade and investment ties between the two countries would develop further in the years to come. He expressed his joy at progress in Vietnam-US relations, and briefed Baucus on Vietnam’s socio-economic development as well as its efforts to mitigate any negative impacts resulting from the world economic slowdown and to maintain growth and ensure social security. Together with economic development, Vietnam has paid due attention to social security, welfare for workers and social equality, therefore the legislature has spared no efforts to draft laws regarding labour, health care and the environment, the legislator noted. He thanked Baucus for his positive contributions to developing the Vietnam-US relationship, particularly regarding the extension of the permanent normal trade relations status with Vietnam. Luu urged the senator to use his position, voice, experience and understanding of Vietnam to continue strengthening the friendship and multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and the US. Baucus said he would like the US to apply the Generalised System of Preferences to Vietnam and to see the bilateral relationship develop in the future. The senator said that Vietnam is ahead of regional nations in terms of intellectual property rights enforcement, and he hoped that the country would record more progress in this field as well as in issues relating to labour.
