Senior US Senator Max Baucus Thursday backed Vietnam’s bid for its exports to receive preferential treatment under the US Generalized System of Preferences (GSP).

Baucus, chairman of the US Senate Finance Committee, endorsed Vietnam’s bid for GSP status during a meeting in Ho Chi Minh City with Le Hoang Quan, chairman of the city’s People’s Committee.

But Baucus said GSP status may be difficult for Vietnam to obtain if the country’s labor regulations didn’t comply with international guidelines.

Quan, meanwhile, called for the US to ease the supervision of Vietnam’s textile and garment products, as well as grant the country GSP status.

Under the GSP program, 132 developing countries are able to export to the US without attracting any import duties.

Baucus’ meeting with HCMC officials was part of the senator’s four-day trip to Vietnam which concludes tomorrow.
