The Vietnam Union of Women (VUW) should work closely with government agencies to campaign for hunger eradication, poverty reduction, job placements and other social activities to assist the country’s development.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung made the request during a working session with leaders of the Vietnamese Union of Women in Hanoi Thursday.

The government leader put particular emphasis on the issue of gender equality, urging VUW chapters to promote the Law on Gender Equality, to improving awareness among both women and men and helping to put an end to domestic violence.

“During the revolutionary process, our Party and state always paid attention to gender equality, which is reflected clearly in every family, locality and sector,” Dung stressed.

However, to attain the target of full gender equality, the VUW should work harder in disadvantaged, remote and ethnic minority-inhabited areas, Dung said.

The prime minister praised the union for its work over the past year, particularly its efforts to support its members in poverty reduction, vocational training and gaining employment.

VUW President Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa said the union, in conjunction with the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, has helped almost 60,000 women receive vocational training and 60,500 people find stable employment.
