Vietnam began commemorating the 64th anniversary of the Vietnam People’s Army (December 22, 1944-2008) and the 19th anniversary of the People’s National Defense Day Sunday with various activities nationwide.

A delegation of Central Military Party Committee’s members led by Defense Minister Phung Quang Thanh called on General Vo Nguyen Giap, first commander-in-chief of Vietnam People’s Army, at the latter’s house in Hanoi.

Giap said the army should maintain their political firmness, unswerving loyalty to the Party’s revolutionary cause, and their readiness to accomplish any mission of the Party, the government and the people.

On the same day, Hanoi’s Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union held an event called Dong hanh voi nguoi giu bien (Side by side with sea keepers) to celebrate the anniversary with Vietnamese People’s Navy in Hai Phong City.

In the South, authorities of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province and many former inmates of the infamous Con Dao Prison installed a giant bell and bell tower on the Con Dao Island.

The bronze bell, 4.65 meters high and weighing 9.4 tons, pays the nation’s tribute to war martyrs who died on the island in wars against the French and American armies.

The monument, sponsored by Vietinbank, is part of the VND74 billion (US$4.3 million) Con Dao Temple project, which is due to be completed in 2011.
